Why I hate social media<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

People often think I love social media.<\/p>\n

That makes sense, too. I post photos and videos and am active on various platforms.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

People sometimes think that I crave attention.<\/p>\n

I see. With my tattoos, I look a bit flamboyant and I often show myself off in all my finery.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But honestly?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

To be honest, I really can\u2019t stand it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And not just a little bit, either.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Small Talk<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not creating content. That\u2019s actually what I enjoy. I love writing, taking photos, filming and creating. My head is bursting with ideas, and I\u2019d love to bring them all to life.<\/p>\n

What I don\u2019t like is everything that goes with it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s no coincidence that, before I set up my businesses, I wasn\u2019t on social media (anymore).<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not for nothing that I\u2019ve disabled the DM function on my current social media accounts. And I tend to cut other chat conversations short fairly quickly.<\/p>\n

Even in face-to-face situations, I can\u2019t stand conversations that go nowhere.<\/a> The same old chat, dozens of times a day. Starting with: \u201cHi darling\u201d, followed by nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not very good at small talk.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nor in real life.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one thing that really gets me excited, it\u2019s a good conversation. Someone with a sense of humour. Someone who\u2019s passionate about something. Or someone who simply has something interesting to say.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not twenty messages asking how my day is going. Or thirty times asking if I\u2019m doing anything fun.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I actually see my social media as a shop window.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You have a look around. You find out who I am. You decide whether or not you want to buy something.<\/p>\n

Just like in a shop.<\/p>\n

Or better still: a self-service shop.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not online all day<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

If my shop were actually a physical shop, I wouldn\u2019t spend hours standing by the shop window having a chat with every passer-by either.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That might sound a bit businesslike.<\/p>\n

But it is fair, though.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Many people think that content creators are online all day long.<\/p>\n

Some people might be like that too.<\/p>\n

Not me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019d rather spend my time \u2013 apart from with my family and my partner \u2013 writing new blog posts, creating unique content, coming up with ideas for new photo shoots or working on my website.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because, in the end, this is more rewarding for me than chatting to everyone on social media.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Instagram post<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

An Instagram post might only last a day.<\/p>\n

A good blog can continue to attract visitors for years to come.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Perhaps that\u2019s why I\u2019m more of a writer than an influencer.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m actually quite happy about that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019d rather build something that will still be attracting visitors in five years\u2019 time than a post that will be forgotten by tomorrow. It might not be as spectacular as going viral, but it suits me just fine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not an influencer who just happens to write.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a writer who just happens to use social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I can\u2019t stand social media<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Whilst I regularly post on social media, in real life I prefer to keep to myself as much as possible. I\u2019m quite independent and enjoy being on my own.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because I have lots of hobbies and interests and I\u2019m perfectly happy keeping myself entertained.<\/p>\n

And because talking to people a lot tends to drain my energy rather than give me any.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On social media, I show what I make, what I sell and what services I offer.<\/p>\n

After all, you\u2019ve got to put food on the table, and if you don\u2019t make yourself seen, people won\u2019t even know you exist.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s as simple as that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Back when I was still just using social media for personal reasons (on the advice \u2013 or at the insistence \u2013 of a friend who thought I\u2019d love it), I found that I quite enjoyed posting a photo or a message every now and then, but didn\u2019t feel like responding to the comments that followed.<\/p>\n

I also received messages via DM from people I hadn\u2019t spoken to for years and didn\u2019t really need to speak to anymore.<\/p>\n

Or worse still, messages from strangers who wanted to get to know me or even meet up with me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not because I don\u2019t like them.<\/p>\n

I just don\u2019t feel the need for it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

I see my own friends a few times a year. I\u2019m not keen on having to maintain any more social contacts than that.<\/p>\n

Not online either.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Oh, right. <\/strong><\/p>\n

And, as far as I\u2019m concerned, tattoos are a matter of personal taste, not an invitation or a statement.<\/strong><\/p>\n
